Google Amp Is No Longer Relevant For Shopify Stores

Accelerated Mobile Pages are obsolete! They are blocked by multiple Browsers because of "harmful" behaviour, and they don't get preferential treatment in Google search.

Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) pages are obsolete for Shopify Stores

Today they are blocked by multiple Browsers (other than Chrome), which are used by more and more people) and they don’t get preferential treatment in Google searches anymore.

In June 2021, Google updated its ranking algorithm with significant changes in its page experience improvements.

This is a critical update for Shopify’s e-commerce stores because they are the most hit. The Core Web Vitals assessment was upgraded from the previous Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) pages.

When Google crawls your Shopify store, it fetches your actual Shopify store pages, not the AMP pages you are using. This means they collect the page signals, the page experience, and the Web Vitals metrics from your actual store pages and your real visitors. We call this (field data).

The Top Stories carousel, Google Products, and the AMP badge icon are removed from the search results.

To get more traffic these days, you can just focus on your page experience, get a faster store with better core web vitals and safely ignore Google AMP when building your store.

Google’s Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) are no longer required to rank in Search Engines for Shopify stores

You can find more about this announcement in the google developer article at Google Page Experience. “As previously announced, the page experience update will consider several page experience signals, including the three Core Web Vitals metrics: LCP, FID, and CLS (as well as Chrome’s recent fix to CLS). … This means that using the AMP format is no longer required and that any page, irrespective of its Core Web Vitals score or page experience status … Additionally, we will no longer show the AMP badge icon to indicate AMP content.”

This is good news and an extraordinary step toward a more independent, open, and healthier web. AMP pages are limited; if you still choose them, you have to renounce essential features from your Shopify themes, so having a faster store is better.

You can outrank AMP pages and get more search traffic from this update by creating a faster website with a better user experience. This is the ultimate goal for any business, whether a Shopify store, a website, or a blog.

The page experience is king.
